Garter Lane is home to a beautiful 164 seater theatre space in the heart of Waterford City, where nationally acclaimed theatre is regularly presented alongside a host of locally produced work of the highest standards.
The theatre is housed in a former Quaker Meeting House and is the perfect stage size for the truly memorable intimate (but not too intimate) theatrical experience.
Ever since the late 80s Garter Lane Theatre has highlighted local producers as well as supporting and programming the best that national touring companies have to offer. We regularly feature “new works” and we programme for all ages young and old alike. High quality and educational Children’s theatre is an important feature in our programme and we are delighted to note here that in 2020 our Theatre Artist in residence was Deirdre Dwyer who’s programme of work was that of making work for Children and mentoring those who are concerned with Making Theatre For Children & Young People. Our beautiful 164 seater theatre, which was once a Quaker Meeting House was completely refurbished and re-opened in December 2006. The seating configuration was altered to a racked bank from being banked on 3 sides, and the unique wooden gantry remains in place. On the boards that night were an all-star cast featuring in the second iteration of Jim Nolan’s Salvage Shop. The highly acclaimed local writer and director recently brought his award-winning piece Red Iron to reality on Garter Lane’s stage over a 3 week sell outrun. The theatre regularly sees local productions brought to life as a result of the symbiotic relationships with organisations whose passion and interest in theatre-making with young people are the bedrock of their work, as such the arts centre is delighted that our stage and rehearsal room are used by Waterford Youth Arts, Little Red Kettle and many local stage schools and dance groups.
Our theatre is fitted with a state of the art DCP (4k Digital Cinema Projector) and full cinema screen, our yearly programme sees the best arthouse and world cinema titles from Access Cinema, IFI, EOS (Exhibition on Screen) and Event Cinema Screenings such as Screenings from Shakespeare’s Globe.
Our theatre space is centrally located with perfect access to the Waterford Quays and central shopping and dining amenities and we are proud to be an accessible and functional historic building in the heart of Waterford’s emerging Cultural Quarter.
We look forward to your visit and we hope you enjoy your engagement with Garter Lane Theatre.
