The practical tools and models have been the most helpful part as a way to create clarity, direction and help with adaptability.”Actor/Director and Breaking Ground Participant 2021

What does it do?

Breaking Ground 2 asks: ‘How can we be better in our careers’?

We approach this as a group, in a way that allows us to find our own answers.

Each week we unpick many of the key elements of career management and development for creatives in a practical and pragmatic way.

  • Connecting with others
  • Overcoming challenges and developing new ways forward
  • Finding (and re-finding) a direction for your career
  • Managing yourself, your time and you work

Have you ever wondered how you might make your career:

more meaningful ?

more productive ?

more sustainable?

“I have a lot more confidence in my abilities as an artist. I also have the tools to focus on charting my career progression as well as a deeper understanding of my behaviour and why I do certain things in relation to my practice.”

Who is this for?

It’s for you if you are a Professional Creatives, of any type. If you freelance and are looking to enhance your career trajectory. The course offers tools, approaches, theories and practical exercises that will allow you to better facilitate your own career development.

 Why do I need it?

Typically, we lack places where we can go as creatives, artists to ask questions about our careers and how we might move them forward. The course offers an environment that is safe, supportive and empowering. In this space we reflect on where we have been and we learn from other artists.

What’s the Approach?

The course, is the result of Andrew Macklin’s research into the work lives of professional creatives. Andrew is a trained coach and has delivered coaching for many UK based companies and organisations. Having looked at how freelancers manage their careers and understanding that there has been significant development in that area over the last 30yrs,  Andrew Looks at “here’s what the research says” and encourages potentially adopting some of those approaches. Andrew says:

“I want people to be equipped to make more assured decisions and to take more ownership of their careers and to feel like that is an exciting and creative process”

What are the results?

Clarity: People have a clear sense of what they want to do in their careers, why it’s important to them and what their next steps can be. Knowing how to create that clarity for yourself in this way is such a useful tool.

“The 1-2-1 was a highlight. It allowed me for the first time, in a very long time, to take stock of what I am aiming to do and the small changes that can allow that to happen.”

Collaboration: Having connected and learned from others through working in a group broadens our own perspectives on what it means to be in the arts and embeds us in a vibrant and thriving community. The last two years have manifested in less opportunity to be in a discourse space with other artists who are dealing with similar challenges. Breaking Ground 2 offers an antidote and provides a shared progress and development forum.

Growth: Breaking Ground 2 offers tools, perspectives and understanding to Professional Creatives which in turn enable them to manage their own career development. The ability to navigate the sudden landscape changes and shifts that are a regular feature in the arts sector, those who have been through Breaking Ground 2 capable of re-assessing where they are, and shape their own way forward.
