Our Place in the Community

Garter Lane Arts Centre is a vibrant and thriving multidisciplinary venue for visual arts, theatre, dance, music, film, children’s arts programming and professional development opportunities for artists spread over two Georgian buildings in the heart of Waterford City. Garter Lane Arts Centre welcomes over 30,000 visitors annually and is supported by the Arts Council, Waterford City Council, the Department of Social Protection, its Patrons and Friends. And sponsored by Sanofi.  The Arts Centre has been at the heart of the community of Waterford for 40 years, through its diverse year-round programme of exhibitions, performances, classes, workshops, talks, screenings and outreach programme.

Theatre

Garter Lane is home to a beautiful 164 seater theatre space in the heart of Waterford City, where nationally acclaimed theatre is regularly presented alongside a host of locally produced work of the highest standards

The theatre is housed in a former Quaker Meeting House and is the perfect stage size for the truly memorable intimate (but not too intimate) theatrical experience.

Art Gallery

Garter Lane Arts Centre boasts two exhibition spaces, centrally located in the heart of Waterford’s emerging Cultural Quarter.

Housed in a former Quaker Meeting house, our Main Gallery space and FOH/Front of House exhibition space are both programmed year-round with a cross-section of contemporary and locally produced visual art.

Studios Spaces

The Centres’ historic Georgian building facilitate 7 artist studios on the upper floor of the tallest building on O’Connell St., with views over looking the Suir river.

The studios are equipped with lighting, heating & Wi-Fi, and artists have their own access to the space. One of these studios is a dedicated bursary space awarded to an emerging Degree Student from WIT’s School of Art.

Garter Lane Buidings

Garter Lane Arts Centre is proud to boast two Georgian buildings of historical significance on O’Connell St in the heart of Waterford city. Housed at No. 5 and 22a respectively are the Garter Lane Artists Studios, administration, Sprung Dance Floor/Studio, Childrens Workshop and A Little Room Theatre Development Centre. Up the street at No.22a is the Arts Centres 164 seater theatre space, comfortable raked seating accommodates local and regional  audiences for theatre performances, conferences, presentations and state of the art 4K Digital cinema screenings. This space is flanked in the same building by the arts centres Gallery space, here a beautiful wooden floored exhibition space houses works year round and above it is a very convenient and well situated rehearsal space.
