sprOg Children's Festival

SprOg at Garter Lane is back with a bang! Running each day from Monday 26 to Friday 30 July, and generously sponsored by Genzyme, supported by Waterford City Council and Fáilte Ireland, there’s a plethora (that means a load!) of delights for children with a chance to dance, paint, see a show, make a puppet or a book, decorate a fairy cake, see beautiful children’s illustrations and even make some music. Some of the usual suspects will return this year including Philip Cullen with his own brand of musical art as well as some newcomers like award winning illustrator and author Bruce Ingman reading from his children’s books including When Martha's Away and Bad News, I’m in Charge!! Some of the workshops are free, and as spaces are limited, book early on 051-855038 or soon to avoid tears and disappointment. One of the highlights of the festival will be Enchanted, with ravenous beasts, princesses in distress, weird and wonderful creatures, an exhibition which celebrates illustrations from children’s books, displaying the works of five published and award-winning illustrators, Annie West, Adrienne Geoghegan, Bruce Ingman, Niamh Sharkey and Oisín McGann. Also on display will be ‘artefacts’ of cherished children’s books as well as a reading area to enjoy the stories and illustrations, with an opportunity for children to make their own illustrations. There are also free book making workshops and reading workshops and a return of the fairy cake decorating workshops were you get a chance to eat your own art! Each day, there are Noisy Art workshops with Philip Cullen, where you get the chance to jiggle some funky and unusual musical instruments and have fun playing games. On Tuesday afternoon, Libby Seward works with babies and toddlers and their parents in Baby Boogie and with children aged 5 years and up in Dizzy Dancers. The Kidding Ensemble have super workshops each afternoon, Wednesday to Friday, with a chance to make your own puppets and put on your own show, and their show Creatures from Suitcases is on Thurs 29 July at 6pm. Finally, Little Red Kettle’s summer play on Fri 30 July There Might be Zombies brings the whole festival to a sparkling finish. See you at sprOg
